Explore Africa During the Summer Season

Africa is such a vast continent that there’s always something new to see or do, and undoubtedly one of the most popular times to visit is during the summer season, especially in Southern Africa. For those from the Northern Hemisphere it provides a welcome respite from the cold and rain. For those of us more local, summer is the time for long holidays, lounging by the pool and maybe some leisurely game viewing. The weather is great (mostly!), there are loads of deals on both domestic flights and regional flights. The hardest thing you’ll have to do is choose exactly where you want to go. Beach getaways, city breaks, fantastic game viewing and marvelling at natural wonders are all options. So where will you be off to this summer? Here are our top picks for 2016/17.

Okavango Delta, Botswana
Catch a flight to Maun, and then spend a few days being amazed at the sights of the Okavango Delta. November to January are smack bang in the middle of summer and the rainy season, so expect it to be hot and very green. The views and scenery are stunning, although you may see less game than you would in the dry season.

Walvis Bay
A trip to Walvis Bay offers up some of the most exciting outdoor activities, from dolphin cruises to kite-boarding. With a number of activities on offer, and a variety of beach-side restaurants, a beach holiday to Namibia during the South African summer promises to be nothing short of memorable!

Knysna, South Africa
The jewel of South Africa’s spectacular garden route, Knysna is famed for its dramatic sandstone formations which separate the lagoon from the ocean. A charming town, big enough to keep you busy but small enough to feel idyllic, Knysna is home to some lovely restaurants, great beaches and the famous Knysna quays. There are cheap flights available from Johannesburg to George, and the drive from George airport to Knysna is easy and scenic, making it a perfect spot for locals and tourists alike. While you’re there, explore the Garden Route further. Visit the Tsitsikamma, check out the Sedgefield market and head down to Buffalo Bay for some surfing lessons. For the best cocktails around, head up to the bar at Pezula golf estate.

If you’re planning a trip to Swakopmund, be sure to set aside a day to spend on the beach. With high summer temperatures, and unforgettable spots for surfing and fishing, your holiday is sure to be one centred around the beach! The ideal destination for families who are looking to take a break from the hustle and bustle of South African cities but don’t want to venture too far, Swakopmund is merely a short flight away!

While you plan your South African summer holiday, be sure to keep an eye on flight specials – not only are you sure to save money, but you’re also guaranteed the best in local air travel service.
