Our  Pilot Training Program was launched in 2008 and aims to creatively address the looming pilot shortage which is imminent in the aviation industry.

This means that the search for talented candidates has long begun!

We are proud to implement a program of this nature, building skill and expertise in the aviation sector. SA Express plans to make a significant contribution to the trade, travel and tourism industries within South Africa.

SA Express, Margot Venter, currently manages the Pilot Training Program, together with Pilot Recruitment. We are looking for people who are not only passionate about aviation, but who are committed in making dreams a reality. We encourage all those who would like to be groomed to become pilots of a world-class airline such as SA Express to complete our online application.  Should they meet the criteria as defined by our requirements, they will be opening more than a window to the world.

Potential candidates will follow the standard SA Express Selection Process:

  • Pre-Screening
  • Technical Exam (Mach 2 only)
  • Psychometric evaluation
  • Simulator assessment (Mach 2 only)
  • Medical evaluation
  • Final Interview

SA Express presents interested pilots with two options: The Cadet Mach 1 Program and the Cadet Mach 2 Program. Both Programs run concurrently every year.

Cadet Mach 1

 

Mach 1 is the abinitio course for the cadets who have zero or very few flying hours. These candidates would have to be sent to a flying school for 18-24 months in order to complete a full Commercial Pilot’s License prior to being brought into SA Express to join the Dash 8 aircraft pool.

Selection Process:

A tiered selection process will be followed for the Mach 1 Programme, with successful candidates sent to a flying school to study a SA Express developed and approved course.

Requirements:

Previously disadvantaged individuals

South African citizen

Qualifications:

Matric Certificate or

N3 Certificate or

Relevant SAQA accredited Tertiary Qualification

Compulsory Subjects:

Mathematics or Statistics 101

Physical Science

English

All subjects to be passed with a minimum:

D symbol on HG or C symbol on SG or Level 5

Maximum age: 25 years old

Minimum height: 1.60m

Pass a security competency assessment

Must be willing to relocate for the duration of the training

Must have good communication, judgement and decision-making skills

Must have the ability to multitask

Undergo a SACAA medical examination

Have good hand-eye co-ordination

Be highly self motivated and technically minded

Have the ability to work under pressure

Be confident and assertive

Be prepared to sign a training bond

Cadet Mach 2

 

Mach 2 is focused at Previously Disadvantaged Individuals (PDIs) who are fully qualified Commercial Pilots but cannot find employment because of their low time experience level.

Selection Process:

A tiered selection process will be followed for the Mach 2 Programme, with successful candidates progressing onto either the Bombardier Q400 or the Bombardier CRJ 200 pool.

Intense technical training and ground school is followed by simulator training, after which Line Flying Under Supervision (LFUS) is conducted.

After successful completion of the LFUS, you will be signed out to fly the line as a Junior First Officers.

Requirements:

Previously disadvantaged individuals

South African citizen

Maximum age: 30 years old

SACAA Commercial License with the following endorsements:

 

  • Instrument rating
  • Multi Crew rating (optional)
  • Turbine rating (optional)
  • Valid Class 1 medical
  •  Multi-engine rating

Pass a security competency assessment

Must be willing to relocate

Must have good communication, judgement and decision-making skills

Be highly self motivated

Have the ability to work under pressure

Must be willing to work with a roster and to a full FDP

Be prepared to sign a training bond
