Working on a budget? Here's how to Avoid Baggage Fees

Taking a vacation can be costly. From browsing around for flight specials to paying for accommodation and transportation at your new destination and ensuring you have enough spending money. Forking out extra money on baggage fees can be an unnecessary cost to you.
So how can you ensure you’ve packed all your essentials
if you haven’t racked up your usual chunk of luggage for a week-long trip?
Here are a few useful tips to avoid unnecessary baggage fees:
  • Know the terms and conditions
Baggage fees differ between airlines and are subject to change every time. When booking your flight online, ensure you know how much it would cost you if your baggage is overweight. Based on that, you’d be able to decide if you’re continuing with the booking or will look for an airline with cheaper baggage fees or none at all.
  • Pack less clothing
Checking the weather of your destination at the time of your travel is important and will assist in your wardrobe preparations. Plan your outfits per day or event instead of simply forcing every item of clothing into your suitcase.
  • Get a luggage scale
Weigh your bags before you leave the house. If your baggage weighs more than the required limit, you’ll be able to get rid of any items you don’t need before you leave for the airport.
  • Wear your heavier items of clothing
A heavy item of clothing can add a few kilograms to your baggage. If you’re taking one of the flights to PE or a flight to Cape Town in the warmer months, despite it being sunnier, the weather could be windy. Take the load off your baggage and wear your heavy jacket onto your flight.
  • Use your carry-on bag instead
If your trip is short, all you need really is a carry-on bag. Just make sure it does not weigh more than 7kg. It will also save you a great amount of time from waiting at the baggage carousel for your suitcase to arrive.
You don’t always need to pay baggage fees if you can help it. So, the next time you pack for your trip, make sure you’re not packing items you won’t need.
