SA’s Top Restaurants that Offer Christmas Menus

Going out for Christmas lunch has some distinct advantages: no mess, no fuss, and no kitchen disasters that will leave you feeling frazzled and stressed out. If you’ve hopped on one of the many domestic flights to a local holiday destination, you’ll be relieved not to have to cook a full Christmas lunch or dinner in a kitchen you’re unfamiliar with, especially if you don’t have pantry staples available like you would at home.

Whether you want to take family out on Christmas day itself, have a big gathering on Christmas eve, or are looking for a suitable venue for a Christmas party for the office, a good meal at a restaurant always hits the spot. Here are some restaurants in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban that are offering great Christmas menus for 2016.

Johannesburg
While Gauteng is traditionally a bit quiet over the festive season, those who remain in the province for Christmas will know that there are a few treasures to be found on the culinary scene. While lots of restaurants will keep their doors open until at least Christmas Eve, some restaurants make a special effort and devise a new menu for the night. Here are our top choices in Joburg:

Clico in Rosebank are offering a special five course meal for R595 per person – and you can sample it on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, or Boxing Day. They say five courses, but it also includes a palate cleanser and amuse bouche…so seven courses, really!

Piccolo Mondo in Sandown is also coming to the party, with a choice of either a set three-course menu or a buffet. We personally think the buffet sounds incredible, with homemade specials like a maple gammon and a selection of desserts. Isn’t Christmas all about the dessert?

Cape Town
Seats on South African flights from Joburg to the Mother City are fully booked as Gauteng-dwellers descend upon Cape Town over the December period. As the culinary hub of South Africa, those who are in Cape Town over the festive season are in for a real treat. There are so many options that it’s almost impossible to decide where to go, but here are some suggestions regardless!

Spier wine farm is near enough to the city for you to get there easily, but far away enough to feel like you’re on a magical getaway. This year, Spier will be hosting a lamb spit braai complete with live jazz on Christmas Eve, and a three-course dinner in the manor house on Christmas Day. Whichever you choose, Spier offers a beautiful setting, delicious food and – of course – great wine!

If you’re someone who loves a traditional Christmas meal, but don’t want to cook it, then Ons Huisie is your best bet. This spot in Blouberg is a firm favourite with the locals, so book in advance. Their homemade bread is to die for, and they’re offering a three course lunch on the big day itself. Arrive hungry!

Durban
Durban is another favourite holiday destinations among South Africans, whether you’ve taken a short drive down from Gauteng or found a great family flight special from further afield, it offers the best of both worlds; warm beaches, family-friendly venues, and some lovely food.

Of course, The Oyster Box is hosting a Christmas Eve dinner if you feel like splurging. It’s pricey, at R1900 per person for the dinner and dance, but it will be a spectacular evening!

If you, like many of us, need to cut back on spending during the festive season then why not opt for The Big Easy Wine Bar and Grill, where the cost per person is a more modest R395 for a three-course meal on Christmas Eve, or R650 per person for the sharing menu on Christmas Day.
