South Africa is a beautiful country with lots to do and see. Beaches, mountains, forest, valleys and cliffs are all there for our viewing pleasure, and there’s an abundance of hiking, water sports and game and animal viewing. If you have kids, it’s basically a paradise for them! To make sure your kids get the best out of your holidays this year, here are some of the top child friendly places to visit with the whole family. The best part? Domestic flights are easily available to all of these locations, so there are no long travel times. We guarantee that both the young and old will have the time of their lives in these holiday spots.
If you didn’t know any better, you’d swear that the Langebaan lagoon wasn’t even part of South Africa. It looks like its come straight out of a tropical island. The lagoon is great for kids because its shallow, calm and warm. On the off chance that you and the kids want a break from swimming in the clear blue waters and walking along the soft, warm sand, there are plenty of activities available. Take them to Sunny Park or Club Mykonos for a day. Eat out at one of the numerous restaurants and learn to fish or kitesurf. Take one of the many cheap domestic flights to Cape Town and drive down to the lagoon for a truly kid-friendly week away.
The great South African bush
There are game reserves all over the country, most of which are only an hour or two’s drive from a major airport. Take advantage of some of the flight specials throughout the year and head up to the North West province or even down to the Eastern Cape. This is probably best for kids over five, who will be completely in awe of wild rhino, elephants and lions up close on the game drives. In between those, they can swim, eat to their heart’s content and learn about all the birds, bugs and smaller mammals they’ll see wandering around the lodge – think buck, warthog, and maybe even the odd giraffe or two. You can even do a bush breakaway for just a weekend or long weekend, giving you the perfect opportunity to recharge your batteries while the kids have a fun, educational experience.
Beach breakaway on the Garden Route
The garden route is known for being super family friendly. Whether you choose Plett, Buffalo Bay or even Knynsa, there is loads to do for kids. Knysna is another area with a great lagoon and some really safe and shallow beaches, and has enough nearby activities to keep the kids entertained. Plett would be an excellent choice if you also have older kids who want to surf and swim safely while the toddlers paddle. Take the kids to the Outeniqua Mountains, the Tsitsikamma forest, and the Knysna elephant park. Here they can see and touch elephants, as well as learn about them in a fun and educational way. For a bit of fun, take the whole family to Adventure Land in Plettenberg Bay. There’s rides and slides for everyone from granny to the little ones.
