The Top Five Things to See and Do in Kimberly

If you have already booked your flights to Kimberly and are currently putting together an adventurous, jam-packed itinerary, this is the article for you. Read on to discover the top five things to see and do in Kimberly, Northern Cape.

The Big Hole
Let’s get the obvious out of the way first. When most people think of Kimberly, their mind almost immediately goes to the infamous Big Hole.  This massive, open-pit underground mine is truly a sight to behold – and it is certainly one that you won’t be quick to forget. It is hailed for being the largest hole ever dug by hand and is a popular tourist attraction that simply cannot be missed. Even if the history of the Diamond Rush doesn’t entice you, the simple view of this gargantuan man-made wonder is sure to be well-worth the visit.

Magersfontein Battlefield
Fought way back in 1899 between the British and Voortrekkers, the Battle of Magersfontein was indeed a battle to remember – hence the fact that its original battleground has been preserved over the years and still remains a popular tourist hot spot. When in Kimberly, you have the option to explore the battlefield on your own or with the guidance and commentary of a professional tour guide / historian. You will have the opportunity to view the Voortrekker graves, the Burgher Monument, the Highlander Monument, and even peruse the trenches across the battlefield. History lovers are sure to have the time of their lives!

Flamingo World
Although much lesser-known than the two previously mentioned tourist hot spots in Kimberly, Flamingo World is certainly no less exciting, especially if you are in the mood for a spot of gambling and great food. Not only is it an excellent venue for enjoying a bit of down-time (you simply have to book yourself in to the Flamingo World spa for a treatment or two), it also boasts a number of stylish conference rooms perfect for hosting those all-important meetings or business brainstorming sessions. Its unique balance between business and pleasure makes it one of the most enticing venues in the Northern Cape.

Felidae Centre
Even though Felidae Centre is technically located in the Free State, it is still a must-see for all those visiting Kimberly. After all, what South African holiday would be complete without taking in some wondrous wildlife and making the most of the great outdoors? Felidae Centre is a predator farm that allows tourists the chance to get up close and personal with some of the country’s beautiful big cats. Their focus on supporting endangered species and on conservation in general, makes this sanctuary all the more appealing.

McGregor Museum
Having been around for well over 100 years, there is something pleasantly sentimental about the quaint McGregor Museum in Kimberly. You should pay it a visit if architecture is a passion of yours (the design of the museum is, in itself, a sight to write home about), if you wish to view the Duggan-Cronin gallery in all of its glory, or if you are interested in learning more about the rich cultures and history of Kimberly in general.
